The Dream

Last night I saw a one man act play entitled The End of Black Excellence at the Cleveland Public Theatre with my sister and mother. The play is broken into four parts and the play is though provoking and vibrant in regards of visual effects and storytelling. I would rate this play 10/10 even though I'm not a theatre critic. The director shared his opening thoughts about the play and he questioned who defines excellence? The actor also shared his thoughts too and he questioned is living as himself good enough? I'm going to tell you guys what I thought and hopefully you can develop your own thought process when you see it in person (https://www.cptonline.org/performances/seasons/2025-2026/the-end-of-black-excellence/).

The African American community has been through turmoil after turmoil and history has shown that in major ways and frankly, the black population has been on the lower stick ever since ever. The End of Black Excellence explores the highs and lows of the black people and how the black person should or shouldn't think about elevating in this white man's world. If the black person wants to elevate, can he or can she do that with the societal pressures that the white man puts on us? I like to be optimistic in this world but in regards to a black man/black woman elevating in this white man's world, its damn hard but not possible. Everybody has their own definitions of excellence and I truly believe everyone can excel in their own version of whatever their definition of excellence is. To answer the second question, self confidence and knowing thy self is a good place to start and I know the white man's world will try to belittle the black man/black woman but perseverance is also a word that the African American community needs.

I had a dream last night regarding the play. The dream consisted of a quiet street with kids playing with chalk, kids playing in sprinklers and a mother just resting her bones in a rocking chair. Middle class families lived on the street. No Bentleys, no jaguars or any other expensive cars were in the driveways and no mansions were on that street and yet people were happy so my point is living a simple life can be viewed as excellence.
